Developing our community with Fair Trade

Fair Trade is a trade partnership based on dialogue, transparency, and respect that seeks to achieve greater equality in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by providing better trade conditions and ensuring the rights of producers and (Permanent and temporary) labor as well.

Roasted Baby Potato Summer Salad

How to make it

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C or turn on the top grill in the oven. 
  2. Boil the potatoes until cooked through in plenty of salted water.
  3. Drain the potatoes cut them into halves. Drizzle with 1/2tbs of olive oil coating it well and spread it on a baking tray.
  4. Bake or roast under the grill until slightly browned.  
  5. While the potatoes are cooking,  slice the mushrooms, coat them with 1tsp of olive oil and roast under the grill for 3-5 minutes.
  6. Take them out and transfer into a large bowl.
  7. Blanch the sugar snaps in plenty of water for one minute, drain and rinse it with ice-cold water. Set aside to dry.  
  8. Slice the onions, cut the tomatoes in half, chop the herbs. 
  9. Add all the ingredients into a bowl with mushrooms, mix well and season with salt and pepper.  

Daltex and Global Network Summit

Covering the Global Network Summit and discussing institutional support opportunities in supporting small entities to establish small projects that nurture large industries. The agriculture sector is represented at the Forum / India Kassab representing Daltex for its leadership in the sector as well as the empowerment of women in the sector.

The conference aims to bring frugal innovations that are community-based (lead and owned by the community) for three thematic areas of focus: grassroots innovations, schooling for the BoP and affordable housing. The conference will take three days. The first two days are open for a wider audience and follow a traditional conference format, albeit more focused in scope and purpose. The third day follows a round-table format and is by invitation only. It aims at bringing small community-based groups with invited best-practices with the aim of discussing implementation details. 

Fair Trade Congress, Fair Trade Africa

Fair trade is an institutional arrangement designed to help producers in developing countries achieve better trading conditions. Members of the fair trade movement advocate the payment of higher prices to exporters, as well as improved social and environmental standards.

Ms. Hend Kassab participates in Fair Trade Congress as an unelected representative of Egypt at the Fairtrade Africa regular meeting, which reflects the keenness of the presence of the representative of the productive sector in all categories from large entities to smaller entities of producers and managers.

IFC, Daltex & Women in Agribusiness

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, and Daltex, a leading agribusiness producer in Egypt, signed a Memorandum of Understanding today to increase economic opportunities for its women employees and smallholder farmers.

IFC’s advisory team will work with Daltex, which produces fresh fruit and vegetables, to help identify commercially viable, sustainable solutions to increase the share and retention of women workers in select Daltex-owned farms and packaging facilities, and women farmers and smallholders in its value chain. The aim is to generate employment and income streams for these women by integrating them into Daltex operations.

“Including women and men throughout our operations allows us to tap into a much wider and more diverse pool of resources, whether in terms of our employees, farmers or even business partners that we do business with This is part of our broader business strategy to grow production, reach new markets and create opportunities for our communities,” said Hesham El Naggar, ​Daltex CEO.

“Creating economic opportunities for women in key sectors such as agribusiness is one of IFC’s strategic focus areas,” said Sérgio Pimenta, IFC Vice President for the Middle East and Africa. “Investing in women is not only essential for economic growth, but it’s also good for the economy. Companies that attract and retain female employees have a wider and better talent pool.” IFC’s commitment to advancing gender equality is anchored in a strong business case and in client demand for gender-smart solutions, which has significantly grown over the past several years. IFC investee companies in the Middle East and North Africa have generated more than 120,000 jobs for women over the past decade. IFC is also investing in banks for on-lending to women-owned SMEs through its Women Entrepreneurs Opportunity Facility.

Hasselback Sweet Potatoes

How to make it

  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. 
  2. Make a series of 1/8-inch slices along with each potato, slicing 2/3 of the way through.
  3. Stir together the butter, oil, thyme, garlic, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a small bowl. Rub the potatoes all over with the mixture, getting in between the slices.
  4. Place on the baking sheet and roast until the center of the potatoes are tender and the outside is crisp, 50 minutes to 1 hour. Halfway through the roasting time, remove the potatoes from the oven and run a fork gently across the tops of the potatoes, using light pressure, to fan the slices and separate them from one another.
  5. Meanwhile, stir the yogurt and scallions with a pinch salt and pinch pepper. Serve the sauce with the potatoes.

UN Women in Egypt in collaboration with The National Council for Women

AWEF has taken the initiative to empower the women labor in Daltex Multi-sites through various training modules that assist in increasing women’s knowledge and thus developing their career path.

UN Women in Egypt in collaboration with The National Council for Women hosted an event on 25 November, the international day for the elimination of violence against women, at the Mena House hotel to mark the launch of the “#16Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence” under the global theme “#HearMeToo”.

The event took place at the backdrop of the majestic Giza pyramids lit up in orange, symbolizing a bright future free from violence against women and girls. The event was attended by Blerta Aliko; UN Women Country Representative; Richard Dictus, UN Resident Coordinator; Ambassador Ahmed Gamal El-Din, Assistant Foreign Minister; Dr. Maya Morsy, President of the National Council for Women.

It also witnessed a keynote address by Dr. Mona Zulficar and an inspirational story by Samar Hamdy, Farm Worker at Daltex and one of the beneficiaries of Women’s Employment Promotion Programme and Omar El-Borolossy, Egyptian Squash Player.
